The Macedon Football Netball Club would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the country where
we gather to play on today, the Wurrundjeri and Taungurung peoples, their Elders and Ancestors.
What a great day yesterday, initially at Lancefield and then back at Tony Clarke Social rooms.
The MJFC under 12 squad, lead by Kevin, Tony and Frank completed a stunning season finishing second to the stand-out team of Rolling Meadows. Rolling Meadows had not lost a game all year and we saw why. They are a very good side of predominantly 12 year olds that moved the ball extremely well and quickly. The CATS were in touch at half time, but couldn’t halt the run of the opposition.
The coaching panel and parents are all extremely proud of the all 30 CATS in the squad.
We preach the 4Fs – fun, fitness, friendship and footy skills – and the boys certainly displayed this, helped by their parents who have also bought in on this ethos.
Thanks to all other members who trekked to Lancefield to support the boys, and also returned to help demolish 40 pizzas! It was a great night and a perfect way to hand out the runners up medallions for the players.
PRESENTATION NIGHT
Your team managers will be in touch with the schedule for presentation night, and also when to return jumpers and helmets.

Round 12
Hi CATS,
Wouldn't it be nice to wake up on a Sunday to sunny, dry weather - rather than the pitter patter of rain slamming against the roof! It was another wet one as we all saw today - and luckily for the ground there was only three games, with the under 16s having a bye.
We hosted the Kangaroos and had a great day, in front for all 3 games..... except for the last 80 secs of the u14s......ouch....
to quote TM Mark, the under 10s "were a tad slow out of the blocks -- a bit like some of the parents after attending The Event last night -- but in the second quarter they came out with a full head of steam, piling on four goals in about eight minutes, breaking the game wide open". The CATS showed the Kangaroos how to play a solid brand of wet weather football, and ran away with the game winning 7-5-47 to 1-3-9.
the under 12s played good footy against a battling undermanned Kangaroos team, winning 6-4-40 to nil. They had a great start, out of the blocks early (perhaps that extra time in bed helped) and got an unassailable lead. Good form as they approach a rampant Rolling Meadows in two weeks - but wait, Rupo 1st.
well, what a difference a week makes. Last week the ecstasy of a one point win....this week the agony of a 2 point loss. And the Kangaroos scored the winning goal with 80 secs to go! We played so well and arguably deserved a win, but didn't - and the final score is what goes into the system ....... 4-4-28 to 5-0-30...... oh the pain.....we need to nail our chances.
and for those wondering, the under 16s had a bye because the Kangaroos were promoted to div 1.
Well, there are only 2 matches left of the home and away series, before finals - if we are lucky. (Check the RDFL website for ladder positions - there are some cut-throat games coming up for all teams. Regardless, the boys are done us all proud across all ages). So let's leave nothing to chance and get to training for a final crack at honing our skills.
Go CATS!
Round 11
Round 11...... we'll I hope you are all thawed out. It was a wet, cold and slippery day at both Macedon and Lancefield and the CATS had a mixed bag of results but toiled all day.
the under 10s were up against the top placed team Lancefield - and they certainly showed us why they are on top with a great display in the wet weather not letting the CATS have a chance. There were some impressive plays by the CATS, but all efforts were repelled by Lancefield who ran out easy winners.
the under 12s fell agonisingly short - how different it may have been with a dry ball. A very tense last quarter saw the ball in our 50 for much of the time, but we just couldn't convert. Gutsy efforts by the boys, but alas, final scores CATS 1-3-9 to 2-1-13.
the under 14s too were up against the top placed and undefeated Melton. And at quarter time, it appeared that would remain the case. But some brilliant defence for the following 3 quarters didn't allow Melton the chance to score. And some great play up forward saw the scoreboard tick over to get us in front (albeit by the narrowest of margins - but in front is in front). The final 10mins seemed an eternity as we clung on by a point. And that's how it finished - 3-5-23 to 3-4-22.
the under 16s were never in trouble , and even in the wet and slippery conditions showed great skill to run out easy winners 13-12-90 to 3-3-21. They are looking a formidable team and are finally getting all players fit and back on the track. Great to see those who have been injured "getting back on the bike".
We are getting to the pointy end of the season, and all teams are in a position to play finals footy, which will be very exciting. Having said that, we can all miss out - so keep training hard and playing like we know we can.
THANK-YOU
When the weather is as dirty as it was today, that's when we really appreciate the efforts of parent's who coach, manage, umpire, run, train, water, score etc..... so thank you to all.
go CATS,
Round 10
Hi CATS,
What a winters day at Macedon today - from start to finish........... The players (and parent helpers) battled on regardless and really earned their canteen snack. Scoreboard results were similar to round 3 - with 3 wins and a loss. Thanks to all parents and players who made the day for us, and our guests (Lions), very pleasant.
A huge thank you to the under 10s players today for "filling-in" for the Lions, who found themselves 2 players short. As explained by James, by helping out, we all get to play a full game and it shows great sportsmanship - something that we are known for. The scoreboard showed the under 10s continued improvement, scoring in each quarter to win 6-10-46 to 0-2-2 - the margin was reasonable, but it was a battle out there as a few of our boys limped off after some heavy contests.
The under 12s lead at every change, winning 6-5-41 to 1-1-7. Plenty of skill and courage shown by the boys in trying conditions, as the ball got heavier and harder to handle. There was plenty of great passages of play with good skills shown.
Once again the under 14s were jumped at the start and were soon 3 goals behind - which just so happened to be the final margin......3-4-22 to 5-10-40. We aren't switching on at the start - which isn't surprising as our pre-match focus isn't quite right - and once we concede the early advantage, it's hard to catch up. Never-the-less, it was a well fought out game and all indications are that with a full list and 100% focus, we can take on all comers.
The under 16s have been decimated with injuries - only 18 players available today - but it didn't stop the score ticking over. We ran out winners 8-9-57 to 2-6-18. This included 4 first quarter goals that dented any hopes the Lions had of scoring an upset. As with the earlier games, it was a tough contest played out until the final siren. It was a pleasing result for the coaches to secure a win with just 18 players.
It is interesting to review each team's registered numbers with those available to play - injuries and holidays have cut teams down to the minimums. Something to consider when team squad numbers are discussed at the end of the season as we plan for 2012.
With the July holiday break upon us, it's a sleep in next Sunday. Please liaise with your team managers about training during the next two weeks as I am sure there will be some time off.
ROUND 11
A disjointed next round on the 17th July as the 10s, 12s & 16s travel to Lancefield, and the 14s host Melton...... until then, get your tickets for The Event......
go CATS
Round 9
Hi CATS,
Thanks for your wonderful support today of the Gisborne initiative to assist the efforts of the Helping Hand Program, by donating pantry items. There was a huge amount of good quality items that I am sure will find its way to those who most need it. Even within the Macedon Ranges, some families find it difficult to put food on the table - so its great that we can help out in some way.
Playing our nearest neighbour for the return bout saw a reversal of fortunes for the under 10 & 12s, and similar results for the under 14s & 16s.
Having lost the first time around, Gisborne were really determined to win. It was a dour struggle, and after falling behind by 3 goals at half time, the CATS weren't able to peg it back, with the scores ending CATS 1-2-8 to 3-8-26. As we have seen all year with the boys, they never give up and keep striving until the final siren. Gisborne has many 2nd year players, so the future looks good for the CATS as we were able to run with them for most of the day.
The under 12s were on a mission to prove a point having lost the first bout - and the point was made. A great defensive start from the boys and an attacking 2nd quarter saw them well ahead at the major break. There was no time to rest though, so the boys played out the second half of footy to win comfortably and show Gisborne (who we held goal-less) that we are a force in 2011.
The under 14 match saw the Gisborne side play some great footy, which saw them in front at the major break. Gisborne were assisted with some wayward shots at goals by the CATS - perhaps we watched Collingwood the night before - but we slowly turned it around. So it was very exciting when the CATS finally hit the front midway through term 3 - then there was no stopping us with some great play. Final scores saw the CATS 6-11-47 to 5-2-32.
The under 16s were up against an undermanned Gisborne and ran out convincing winners - but the scoreboard didn't reflect the physical nature of the match. There were some very hard hits. What was very pleasing for all to see was the way the CATS shared the ball around, particularly in front of goal.
All games saw some very determined play from the CATS. Whether leading or behind, the boys played with courage and never gave up a contest - that's all we want from our players. Well done to all.
It may have been a beautiful sunny day at Gisborne, but it was an icy breeze! Fortunately we had plenty of merchandise to wear! Don't forget to contact Narelle for your order.
Next week we host Sunbury Lions before the school break......
Round 8
Hi CATS,
A real up and down day today - a great victory, two narrow losses and a result to forget. All played in good spirits which is what we want to see, and in conditions that were very trying for both spectators and players. Round 8 is the first return match, and a good indication of where we stand against the opposition.
What a turn around from round 1, when we were defeated by 46 points!!. Today we were the victors (albeit narrowly) Cats 1-4-10 to 1-1-7. Woodend were held scoreless after quarter time, and we clawed our way back - but didn't hit the lead until the final minutes. Perseverance! This victory, and the way we have been playing lately, shows the improvement in our team as we learn how to play the team sport of AFL - a step up from Auskick. The song was sung loud and long (little did we know that it would the only time today!)
Well..... a tough day for the coaching panel of the under 12s, and the boys and this was reflected on the scoreboard - but I won't repeat it here. Woodend are a good team, but we were well down from our best, and know what we need to do to get back on top. A hard week on the training track awaits.
Woodend jumped us early and we were not able to claw our way back. We stuck at it though which was very pleasing, but ran out of time. Final scores 5-6-36 to 7-5-47. We held them scoreless in the last, but the 3/4 time lead was too much. We continue to learn and are showing great passages of play each week, that is pleasing for all to see.
What a nail biter.... a gripping tussle all day until the final siren. Like the preceding game, we were playing catchup all day, but just ran out of time. Final scores CATS 6-7-43 to Woodend 6-8-44. Another minute and we may have heard the song again but it wasn't to be. It has been a year of attrition for the U16s with 6 players missing today, and an u14 (Ed Morrissey, thanks mate) helping out ensuring that we had a bench.
Round 7
Hi CATS,
Well, we're 1/2 way through the home and away season of 2011. I think it has gone extremely well both on & off the field. Teams have been brilliantly supported by coaches, team managers, trainers, parent helpers and most importantly the players. Great support at committee level also. We commenced the season with the Codes of Conduct in mind, and it has helped as we have supported each other so that our Sundays are enjoyable. I feel very fortunate that my boys are playing with the Macedon Cats.
To all the under 16s who thought Romsey was cold and windy - you should have been at Rolling Meadows. There were several analogies about how cold it was, but I won't print them here - needless to say, it was bitter at both locations.
The under 10s continue to improve and had another great win today against Rolling Meadows. It was a real nail biter as the boys held onto a lead achieved against the wind - quite unexpectedly when you consider the wind advantage toward the city end. Footy can be difficult at the best of times, but in such a wind (gale?) it made it very tough. We hung on to win 3-1-19 to 2-0-12.
In the first quarter of the under 12s, Rolling Meadows kicked an impressive 3-2 with the aid of a 25 knot, ice-cold blast behind them - but from quarter time onwards the Cats where equal to the challenge of the ladder leaders so much so that we outscored them. But the first quarter lead proved insurmountable, finally falling short 2-2-14 to 4-6-30. Rolling Meadows had size - but the Cats had skill and speed - the boys will be looking forward to hosting them on our turf for the last game of the season.
The scoreboard indicated that the under 14s out played the opposition in 3 of the 4 quarters to win easily - but it was still a tough, physical game. There was plenty of body contact and close contests and even in the fluky conditions we showed plenty of skill. Lots of passes by hand and foot allowed us to move the ball quickly, particularly into the wind. Final score 8-8-56 to 2-3-15.
The under 16s played Romsey, who have recently come down from division 1 so were very keen to do well - and they did. They also had the practice game loss to avenge so they hit us hard. Romsey played good footy and showed us up by being first to the ball and playing the wind very well winning 10-8-68 to the Cats 7-8-50. We have many injuries, and are looking forward to the return of those lads - great to see you at the game today showing your support.
As we will all be celebrating the Queen's Birthday next weekend, there will be no time for junior football - so we reconvene 19th June at home, hosting Woodend. The return bouts commence. So at the halfway mark.......
Under 10s - 5th with 4 wins / 3 losses
Under 12s - 3rd with 4 wins / 3 losses
Under 14s - 4th with 5 wins / 2 losses
Under 16s - 3rd with 4 wins / 3 losses
Fantastic scoreboard results, but junior footy is more than that (the 4Fs remember), so congratulations to all for making Sundays very pleasant.
See you in 14 days......
Round 6
Hi CATS,
Another great day at Tony Clarke, with plenty of skill, teamwork and sportsmanship shown on (and off) the field. Net result was Macedon 3 versus Rupertswood 1...... but it wasn't all our way. The contests were all very good and a great advert for junior football, which has had bad press of late - so well done.
The under 10s could have put the game beyond Rupo's reach by half time, but just couldn't quite convert their points to goals. Rupo scored a few late goals to secure the win in a very exciting finish. The under 10s continue to improve and many players bely the fact that today's game was only their 6th. If you are not sure just how big Tony Clarke oval is - ask the under 10s. Final scores Cats 2-6-18 to Rupo 4-3-27....so close.
The under 12s continue to improve each week and today, slowly but surely pulled away from Rupo each quarter. The guys love to share the ball around by hand and foot and it's enjoyable to watch. The skill improvement is easy to see. The song was belted out with the score showing Cats 5-5-35 to Rupo 1-3-9.
The under 14s were ahead all day, but couldn't quite close the door on Rupo until the final siren. The margin was a comfortable 11 points at the end of the day - Cats 6-9-45 to 5-8-34 - but it wasn't over until the final siren. In fact Rupo scored the final 2 goals making it a little tense for the fans.
The under 16s capped off great day with a talented performance to defeat Rupo 13-11-89 to 7-7-49. You may think from the scoreboard that it was an easy win... but far from it. Rupo played well but couldn't finish off their good play - but the Cats did with some great goal kicking... and that was the difference.
ON-FIELD PERSONNEL
You may have read the strife Paul Roos was in because he ran onto the field during an under 16 match. The rules are quite clear and entirely supported by MJFC. Only trainers, runners and water carriers are allowed onto the field of play - and even then, their time spent on the field and what they can say or do are prescribed by the RDFL. In the event of an injury, the MJFC trainer only will attend the player - it's what they are trained to do - and they may seek assistance from the runner or the opposition trainer depending on the assessment. Coaching staff and parents cannot enter the ground for several reasons, including - they may interfere with or disrupt play, come in contact with other players, impact the effectiveness of the trainer to perform their role and generally cause confusion.
If the injury is deemed significant or interfering with play, the Umpire will stop the play. Then it may be of benefit to the player for a parent to provide comfort, but only when escorted by the Team Manager.
Thank you for your cooperation with this and other rules and guidelines within the code of conduct.
ROUND 7
Next week the under 10s, 12s and 14s travel to Rolling Meadows as we reach the mid-point of the season. Please make your own way there - i'm saying nothing!!
The under 16s play at Romsey 2.30pm. If the other age groups can make their way there on the return from Rolling Meadows, the extra support will be appreciated.
go CATS,
ROUND 5 21/5/2011
Hi CATS,
Gee it was good getting home after the under 16 game before 4pm. I think that the under 10s should start at 9am every week........agreed? I'll talk to the league........
Well, it was wet / dry / wet / dry / wet all day today which seems to occur every time we travel to the Kangaroos home turf. At least it wasn't too windy, but the breeze was enough to see scores to the south higher than the north end. We played well on and off the field, which makes for a pleasant Sunday at the footy. I was speaking with a past Operating Manager of the RDFL and he said that Macedon Juniors was always a pleasure to deal with and watch, which is fantastic to hear - and not surprising considering the calibre of the families that support the Club, not just by their efforts, but also their behaviour.
Although starting at 9am, the under 10s made a great start with 4 very quick goals that set up an unassailable lead. This team continues to improve with more and more guys getting familiar with playing footy, as most are in their first year. They are all really enjoying their footy too, as we could see as they blasted out a rendition of the team song after their 9-12-66 to 2-0-12 win. Huge smiles - great to see.
The under 12s continued the Macedon dominance of the day and were never troubled. They started the year slowly but are finding their gear very nicely and are playing great footy. The first half was blistering with 6-6-42 on the board to close the game out, finally winning 8-12-60 to 2-3-15. The under 12 squad are to be congratulated because each week 6 players are rostered off, and 6 are on the bench - and none of them grumble, they turn up to support their mates which is great.
We saw the effect of the breeze clearly in the under 14s as the team kicking against were held scoreless in every quarter, and the other team scoring about 4 goals. Unfortunately for the Cats, the Kangaroos happened to score one more goal than we did when they had the breeze. The scores showed how close the game was with the Cats going down 7-4-46 to 8-5-53 in the last few minutes of the game, not quite holding on. It was a very entertaining game with plenty of skill and effort shown.
Quiz - what do these numbers indicate.....165-2, 104-11, 131-2, 210-0? Well, they happen to be the scores of the Kangaroo under 16's first 4 games! Equating to 160 to 10 scoring shots. So our boys had the job ahead of them! So how were today's numbers -.... SK 16-13-109 to the Cats 8-3-51. Didn't we give them a surprise! We sent them up to division 1 with something to think about - sure they were very good, but the Cats gave a fantastic account of themselves and didn't shirk an issue. Division 2 won't be the same without them.....good eh!
Great efforts by all teams - boys, coaches and parents - well done.......
Again it was great to see the teams supported by those players rostered off for the match or out injured. We encourage the injured to attend training so that they can be involved with skill work and keep part of the team, and keep enthusiasm levels high.
Next week we host Rupertswood, another of this year's new teams to division 2 - good luck to all.........
Round 4 - 14/5/2011
Hi CATS,
Thanks to all players and families for contributing to the Umpires Appreciation Weekend. We are indeed fortunate at the MJFC that we always treat the umpires (and all others) with respect - it makes Sunday's pleasant. Very pleasing to see the players who are rostered off attending and supporting their team mates too - well done boys.
Three very good wins today and a loss - but only on the scoreboard - to the U10s.......
The under 10s had another tough battle against a good opposition. Lancefield scored 2 goals in the opening 5 mins, then didn't score again! Unfortunately for the CATS, we could manage just the single goal to fall short. A gusty effort by all players which was very entertaining to watch.
The under 12s put on an excellent football show piece today with plenty of teamwork - passes by hand and foot and sharing it around with their team mates is great to watch. I know the awards were difficult to hand out as there was contributions by all. The CATS won comfortably 9-9-63 to 0-0-1.
The under 14 match was very similar to the under 12s, with all the boys showing tremendous teamwork with many examples of moving the ball down the field with a chain of hand passes - classy footy. The CATS were very comfortable winners 18-11-119 to nil..... not a nice scoreline, but the boys were very humble in victory which was great to see.
The toughest game was the last - the under 16s. The Lancefield coach (MJFC's premiership coach) was very keen to win, and his team lifted for him.... but it wasn't enough as the CATS won 10-9-69 to 7-10-52. There were many spirited contests and the CATS were forced to dig deep to take the points - well done team. The biggest test is yet to come - Sunbury Kangaroos next week.......
Great to see the MACEDON CATS gear being worn so handsomely by me - i mean by many. If you would like to order some gear, please email Narelle Potter (cc above). Winter Jackets, Training Jackets, Polo Fleece Vests, Polo Fleece Vests, Polo Shirts, Scarves, Beanies, Caps are all available. Several other types of apparel I thought may be available are not....
TRAINERS
I asked last week that players with any injuries see their trainer and receive treatment before they leave the ground - leaving in the back of an ambulance wasn't what I had in mind Liam Reilly (broken collar bone).
But seriously, we have wonderful trainers who can assist with injuries on the day, and more importantly, the ongoing management of those injuries. Our trainers are very good - Peter Morris, Renate Deveson, Geoff Randall, Matt Stewart and Tim Douglas. Chase them up, they'll help........and if you would like to be involved and become a trainer, please let me know. We currently have a great environment to learn the necessary skills that are valuable and transferable into everyday life.
GO CATS
ROUND 3 - 7/5/2011
Hi CATS,
Happy Mother's Day to all the mums......... and what a treat to be taken to Boardman Oval precinct today to watch your sons in action. Last week I described the day as picture perfect......not sure what today was - perhaps cold and drizzly may be best.
Be that as it may, it was still an enjoyable day at the footy. We haven't played the Lions for a long time, so weren't sure what to expect. All 4 teams can be very pleased with the way they played footy and represented MJFC on and off the field....
The under 10s have certainly got that winning feeling bringing up two wins in a row. Unlike last week where the goals were difficult to find, a few more were notched up today. Our defensive pressure was great, as seen on the scoreboard - the Lions didn't have an easy shot at goal all day - and it wasn't until the end that we inched away to win 4-8-32 to 1-13-19.
The under 12s put together 4 quarters of great footy to notch their first win..... well done boys. They have been so close this year, but put the frustration behind them to run away winning 9-11-65 to 3-4-22. There was plenty of fast ball movement and the boys adjusted well as the conditions got slippery during the game.
The under 14s suffered their first loss for the year. The Lions U14s are their strongest side and that showed as they outplayed our boys - but we battled on all day and their were many instances where we through ourselves into the contest at our own peril. Cats 2-7-19 to Lions 6-7-43.
The day got colder and wetter, and the under 16s adjusted very well and played great footy winning comfortably, 17-19-121 to 2-2-14. That may appear to be an easy day on the park, but it was anything but! The Lions were a very physical side who through everything at the boys. It was hard, tough footy but the Cats showed plenty of discipline to play the ball which converted into goals and a great win.
I encouraged everyone last week to listen into the coaches at the huddles..... well.... maybe next week as the wind and rain made it a little unpleasant. But I was told they were all inspirational - it was difficult to hear from the verandah.....
TRAINERS
I would like to thank our talented and caring troupe of trainers - Peter Morris, Renate Deveson, Geoff Randall, Matt Stewart and Tim Douglas. The committee, parents and players all feel much more at ease when we know there is support for the players should they suffer an injury. If your player is feeling a little sore after a game, please do not hesitate in seeking out one of the trainers to have it looked at before you leave. Some niggles can get worse if they aren't treated immediately. We have plenty of bags of ice that you can take away with you and that can prevent bad bruising.
If you would like to be involved and become a trainer, please let me know. We currently have a great environment to learn the necessary skills that are valuable and transferable into everyday life.
GO CATS
Round 2
Hi CATS,
What a great day for football - picture perfect....and nice to be at home. I received many compliments from the Gisborne families too about the Tony Clarke reserve....we are indeed lucky.
Thanks to all parent helpers today, and it's good to see the social circuit up and running in the canteen. A huge thank you to Narelle Potter & Kellie Spry for their wonderful coordination in the canteen. And weren't those bacon & egg sandwiches a welcome treat on a Sunday morning - thanks Dermot Moody.
We hosted our nearest neighbours - Gisborne - for the first time in many years, and the way we played and the results were very good......
The under 10 match was a dour struggle with the scores locked at 0-0 at half-time. The deadlock was broken by a great 3rd quarter goal by the Cats. But it was Gisborne who appeared destined to win as they inched in front as the minutes ticked by...... but a great goal, followed by some solid defence, saw the Cats victors by 3 points. Cats 2-0-12 to 1-3-9. A first up win for many boys and the song sung with great gusto.
The under 12 match was very entertaining with great skill shown by many players. They say the 3rd quarter is the premiership quarter - and that was certainly the case....unfortunately for the Cats, it was Gisborne who played well in that quarter, scoring 4 of their 7 goals. So it was only one quarter that we were out played, but we battled on and were on the way back when the final siren sounded. Final score Cats 5-2-32 to Gisborne 7-4-46.
The under 14s continued their winning form with a comprehensive win, 9-8-62 to Gisborne 3-0-18. With the scores locked at 2 goals each at quarter time, a tough battle looked likely, but the Cats piled on the goals to win well. They are playing with great confidence and are really enjoying Nipper's influence. The talls are playing really tall, and the smalls are running with great pace and they are sharing the ball around with hand and foot.
The under 16s started by conceding the first goal, but soon got on top of Gisborne and won well 16-10-106 to 3-6-24. They played exciting football and showed what they are capable of - so round one must have been an aberration.
I'd also like to congratulate our coaches who conduct themselves impeccably and relate so well with their players, offering encouragement and positive coaching tips in a way that has become synonymous with the CATS ethos. I encourage all parents and friends to listen in on the pre-match and quarter huddle speeches.
As you can see, it was a memorable day both on and off the field with all players and supporters enjoying a pleasant Sunday.......next week we travel to Sunbury to play the Lions , who like Gisborne, we haven't played for many years........ see you all at training through the week.
GO CATS
Round 1
Hi CATS,
Welcome to season 2011 with a trip up to Woodend. It's been several years since we played Woodend as they have been in division 1.
It was a tough day for all teams, with only the under 14s having a win on the scoreboard - but that isn't our only measure, is it. Having fun and playing sport with our friends is more important. We should also remember that because Woodend has two teams in each age group, we were actually playing their upper age teams which is a tough ask for the CATS, who are all mixed.
Always great to watch the under 10s as they learn about playing a football match which is a lot different to "markers up". But they soon get the hang of it as you will see as the year progresses. There were many of red faces by the end of the game as the boys ran and ran until the final siren - and there were just as many smiles after the game as well.
Except for the second quarter, the under 12s matched the Woodend team pretty well and there are plenty of indications there with some great patches of play. The coaching panel was very pleased with the boys efforts.
What can I say about the under 14s? Trailing mid-way through the 2nd quarter, they found plenty of spark and with heaps of determination battled on to win by a single point. A very anxious final few minutes, but we showed great courage in hanging on. A great first up win for Nipper by the boys.
The final game was a tough battle for the under 16s. Woodend were very hungry and ferocious for the ball and hunted in packs. They got an early jump on us and just kept going.
Well - having started the season, we now kinda stop.......... not back until 1st May.........
Look out for emails from your Team Managers to know what is happening with training over the holidays.
